MARC: Mid-America Regional Council

Regional Association of Public Information Officers

Next meeting: Friday, April 27, 2012, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Mid-America Regional Council
600 Broadway, 2nd Floor, Kansas City, Mo., 64105

Topic: Television News

Television news is an ever-changing landscape. The roles of the station and its people seem to constantly change.

  • Assignment editors still listen to police and fire scanners, take calls from tipsters and PR pros, read news releases, and the like. Now they also watch their Twitter feed and other social media channels for breaking news and trends.
  • Reporters and anchors are under pressure to come up with their own news stories, as usual, but now they are also directed to “Tweet” cogent messages on a daily basis to remain relevant.
  • Photographers still work closely with reporters, but now more are having to be a “one man band” “photojournalist” and shoot, interview, edit and voiceover entire stories.

RAPIO has had news directors present to its members recently, but it has been some time since we have had assignment editors and reporters. The April 27 RAPIO meeting will feature an assignment editor, an anchor/reporter and a photojournalist. RAPIO members will enjoy the insights and experiences of:

  • John Crumley, KMBC-9 assignment editor
  • John Holt, WDAF-4 reporter/anchor
  • Eric Schultz, KSHB-41 photojournalist

Please join us for what should be a compelling panel and a great way to put faces with names and voices as well as foster good relationships between PIOS and the media.

If you plan to attend please email Eliza Waterman, ewaterman@marc.org, and also let her know if you’d like lunch, by April 25 at Noon. Lunches are $8 and include a drink. If you have to cancel less than 24 hours before the meeting and don’t have someone to take your lunch, we may have to bill you for it.

About RAPIO

The Regional Association of Public Information Officers (RAPIO) was formed in 2000 to give area PIOs an opportunity to share information, work cooperatively on regional issues and network with their peers.

Members meet monthly (usually on the fourth Friday of each month) at the Mid-America Regional Council offices, 600 Broadway, Kansas City, Missouri. The informal meetings are held over box lunches, and may involve a speaker or presentation, or may be casual exchanges between members.

Meeting notices are emailed in advance of each meeting to those on the RAPIO listserv. All local government employees who are full or part–time PIOs in the metropolitan area — and other local government employees who are regularly called on to serve in a public information capacity — are welcome to attend.
